DESCRIPTION: Frankincense (CO2) Extract Oil is a pure CO2 extract derived from the gum of Boswellia carterii, a tree native to the Middle East. The oil has a resinous, fresh scent with mild sweet and woody characteristics. It can be used to support skin rejuvenation, calm irritation, protect the skin, assist in wound healing, and may help stimulate hair growth and blood circulation. It is suitable for all skin types.
Frankincense (CO2) Extract Oil is produced from the resin of Omani Boswellia carterii and contains approximately 80% essential oil. This CO2-extracted oil is noted for being resinous, sweet, and rich, with a milder scent than steam distilled essential oil. The steam distilled frankincense oil generally has a shorter shelf life due to its monoterpene content and exposure to heat during production, whereas the CO2 extraction process involves minimal heat, resulting in a longer shelf life. The CO2 process also enables the retention of heavier molecules such as diterpenes and diterpenols (including incensol, incensole acetate, and octyl acetate), which are less readily captured through distillation.
Difference between Frankincense (steam distilled) essential oil and Frankincense CO2 extract oil
- The CO2 extraction method captures a broader range of aromatic compounds and offers greater stability compared to steam distilled frankincense oil.
- Frankincense CO2 extract oil contains additional lipophilic components from frankincense resin, with around 80% essential oil content; therefore, the scent profile is weaker than that of the steam distilled version. The CO2 process allows for better retention of heavier diterpene and diterpenol molecules (such as incensol, incensole acetate, and octyl acetate).
- CO2 extracts also demonstrate greater heat resistance, higher viscosity, more color, and the inclusion of other essential active ingredients.
