DESCRIPTION: Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA, thioctic acid, or ɑ-lipoic acid) is a high-purity, liposoluble active with very potent anti-ageing properties, as well as skin-lightening properties. It stimulates cell proliferation in the dermis – specifically fibroblasts, which are involved in collagen production. Alpha Lipoic acid boosts skin suppleness and rejuvenates the appearance of the skin.

Alpha Lipoic acid is proven to quench hydroxyl radicals, hypochlorous acid, and singlet oxygen. Alpha lipoic acid when used with other anti-oxidants helps recycle them and make them more bioavailable in the skin. It increases the levels of CoQ10 (Ubiquinone), and Ubiquinone recycles vitamin E and regenerates glutathione. It also stimulates their production in skin cells. Alpha Lipoic acid has high absorption and bioavailability. It is able to pass through both water-loving and oil-loving parts of the skin cell – making it very bioavailable in the skin. It lifts, lightens, and brightens the skin tone, improving the complexion. It reduces hyperpigmentation and irritation by UVB and rosacea.

ALA treats cell damage caused by UV light. Since it is sensitive to light, it cannot be used as a preventive measure.

FEATURES

  • Strong antioxidant activity neutralizing free radicals
  • Anti-ageing – anti-wrinkle
  • Brightening
  • Potentiates other antioxidants
  • Good skin penetration and bioavailability
  • Anti-inflammatory – skin-soothing
  • Suppleness boosting
  • ALA is an acid so can potentially be irritating. We recommend starting at the lower end of the recommended use rate9 0.3 – 0.5). A slight tingling/burning feeling upon application is common and usually goes away after a few minutes. If not, wash off and use a smaller percentage. We recommend pairing it with Irritation-Shield in emulsions. Irritation-Shield can dramatically reduce potential irritation of actives.
  • Alpha Lipoic Acid is highly sensitive to UV radiation. To prevent degradation, use dark packaging. The addition of UV-Shield Oil helps protects light-sensitive actives like ALA from degrading.

HOW TO USE

INCI: Thioctic Acid

Solubility: Oil or glycol (For clear oils and emulsions – not for clear water-based systems).

Use rate: 0.5 – 5.0% (We recommend concentrations between 0.3 – 0.5 to avoid irritation. You can also add Irritation-Shield which reduces the irritation of potentially irritating actives)

Temperature Tolerance: Avoid temperatures above 40°C.

pH Stability: 4.0 – 6.5

Appearance: Yellowish powder.

Assay: 99.0 – 100.0%

Storage: Refrigerate for the best shelf life. Lasts up to 4 years if stored well. Store in a cool, dark and dry place.
