An amino acid derivate and an extremolyte with outstanding hydration restoration and barrier protection and repair. (Extremolytes are molecules that protect organisms in extreme conditions, such as in salt lakes, hot springs, deep sea and deserts) It is also very easy to work with – works within a wide pH range (pH 1.0 – 9.0) and can be added to the heated phase of your formulation. It exhibits skin moisturization with improved long-term hydration levels. It is an anti-irritant, making it suitable for all skin types, especially baby skin and sensitive skin. It helps repair damaged skin.

In anti-ageing skincare, it reduces crows-feet wrinkles, improves skin elasticity, and prevents skin roughness and scaling. Mechanism of Action: Ectoine has a simple mechanism of action with outstanding capabilities; It has high electronegativity, which enables it to easily form hydrogen bonds with water molecules. This, in turn, enhances the association of water molecules and causes them to orient themselves around ectoine, forming protection shells around cell membranes, DNAs, enzymes, proteins, and other biomolecules. This phenomenon is known as the “Kosmotropic effect”.

Cell Protecting: The study found that exposing cells to UV radiation resulted in reduced activity of Langerhans cells (cells that protect the skin from dangerous microbes and substances). However, when treated with 1% Ectoine, the damage caused by UV radiation significantly decreased, increasing cell activity by 10.5% after 6 hours compared to the positive control group.

Moisturization: The results of the test indicate that Ectoine is highly effective in enhancing the moisture content of the skin, and its impact lasts for a long time. Following a one-hour application of 2% Ectoine cream, the skin’s moisture content increased by 43.7%. With continuous use of 2% Ectoine cream for four weeks, the skin moisture content increased by 50.5%.

Anti-ageing:  Even at a low concentration, ectoine can penetrate into the dermis, stimulate the proliferation of fibroblasts (very important cells in the dermis) and promote the synthesis of collagen. At 1-m/gml, Ectoine increased the synthesis of collagen by almost 5 times.
