DESCRIPTION: Glutathione is a small peptide molecule made up of three amino acids: cysteine, glutamic acid and glycine. It is a major cellular antioxidant that is crucial for scavenging free radicals. Our glutathione is a high-purity grade and more water-soluble than the conventional type and is easily absorbed by the skin. It acts as a powerful antioxidant and skin lightener; treating dark patches, acne marks, dark underarms, age spots, etc. It does this by making the skin produce the light-coloured pigment pheomelanin, instead of the darker one – eumelanin. It also inhibits hyperpigmentation through other mechanisms.
Glutathione reduced works well with other antioxidants like vitamins C & E, increasing its bioavailability. It helps replenish the skin’s own antioxidant system and neutralize free radicals that stimulate premature ageing of the skin.
It also functions as a precursor to glutathione peroxidase, a key antioxidant enzyme, which protects against lipid peroxidation (fats turning rancid). UV rays penetrate deeply into the dermis and can cause premature skin ageing by damaging the collagen fibres. Glutathione protects the collagen fibres from free radical damage thereby protecting the elasticity of the skin.
Glutathione in its solid state is relatively stable. However, in aqueous solutions, it is easily oxidized by air. See our anti-oxidant solutions.
