DESCRIPTION: Japanese Plum, or Ume extract, is a natural extract with anti-ageing and anti-microbial effects. Japanese Plum Extract is rich in Vitamins (A, B1, B2, and C) as well as proteins and minerals. It helps improve the skin’s barrier and moisturizes the skin.

It is especially effective as an anti-ageing ingredient. It inhibits the formation of A.G.E. (Advanced Glycation End products) molecules and rejuvenates dull and pale skin. Sugar (or Glucose) is a key player in the skin ageing process. While ageing is a natural process, a diet high in sugar accelerates glycation. UV radiation is also one of the causes of AGEs in the stratum corneum based on recent research. Glycation is a condition or process caused when collagen and elastin fibers fuse with excess glucose in the skin. It makes the skin tough and resistant to cosmetics. The skin loses its firmness and flexibility. It also prevents the Millard reaction (non-enzymic skin browning/darkening). See the image below for an illustrative reference.

When used in skin-lightening preparations, it accentuates results, because most skin lighteners don’t deal with glycation-induced skin darkening.
