DESCRIPTION: Octadecenedioic acid is a natural skin-lightening ingredient derived from natural vegetable oleic acid. It’s a powerhouse active with multiple mechanisms of action – inhibiting the entire metabolic pathway of melanin synthesis from the nucleus of the melanocyte cell. It brightens and lightens the skin. It effectively reduces the production of tyrosinase and melanin production, resulting in faded dark spots and hyperpigmentation, lightened skin, a bright complexion, and a more even skin tone. It is especially helpful for stress-induced hyperpigmentation, inhibits melanin transfer, and controls genetic pigmentation. For best results, combine with other skin lighteners.

It treats freckles, melasma, hyperpigmentation, and the general dark colour of ethnic skin. ODA White inhibits the whole melanin synthesis pathway, from the melanocyte nucleus by targeting the tyrosinase gene via the PPARy complex. In vitro studies show mRNA tyrosinase and tyrosinase quantities decrease by 50%, reducing the production of melanin by 44%.

In one study involving 70 women over 12 weeks, hyperpigmentation was significantly reduced. Another study compared it to hydroquinone with similar results (over 40% melanin reduction after 12 weeks) (See references).

A clinical study was carried out on a total of 21 Asian panelists, with twice daily random applications of 1% O.D.A.white™ against arbutin on the forearm for 8 weeks followed by a 4-week regression period, showing spectacular skin-brightening effects. The melanin synthesis started to decrease after application, reaching -22% after 8 weeks for the majority (76%) of the panel, and leads to an increase of the skin clarity up to 28%.

In the picture below, BEFORE: Right arm was treated with ODA White 1% and the left arm with Arbutin 2%. See a visible difference after 8 weeks. AFTER: Right-hand ODA white 1% and left arm Arbutin 2%.

Octadecenedioic also has anti-acne efficacy comparable to azelaic acid at inhibiting the growth of acne-causing bacteria.
