DESCRIPTION: Salicylic Acid (BHA) is a high purity (99.9%) Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA) used in skincare for its, antiseptic, keratolytic (exfoliating), anti-dandruff properties. It helps keep pores open, preventing acne from forming.

As an exfoliating active salicylic acid is quite effective compared to other AHAs since it is able to go deeper into the skin. It removes dead skin cells, smoothens the surface of the skin, improves skin elasticity, and brightens the skin.

Salicylic acid is derived from the metabolism of natural salicin. It’s a star ingredient for acne and oily skin. It acts as a chemical exfoliant – a keratolytic, bactericide, and comedolytic agent.

• Salicylic acid can be irritating to the skin. To mitigate sensitivity, do not use any of the following preparations on the same affected area with salicylic acid, unless otherwise directed by a physician:
  • Other topical acne preparation or preparation containing a peeling agent (eg, benzoyl peroxide, resorcinol, sulfur, or tretinoin [vitamin A acid])
  • Abrasive soaps or cleansers
  • Alcohol-containing preparations
  • Cosmetics or soaps that dry the skin
  • Medicated cosmetics

APPLICATIONS: In lotions, creams, toners, masks, scrubs, liquid soap, shampoos, conditioners, etc. for exfoliating, anti-dandruff, and skin smoothening treatments.

HOW TO USE

INCI: Salicylic Acid

Solubility: Propanediol, Butylene Glycol, Propylene Glycol Isopentyldiol. Isopentyldiol dissolves salicylic acid very well. Possesses some solubility in castor oil. Salicylic acid is notorious to keep stable from recrystallization in clear water-based systems. A lot of formulators find success using a high quantity of humectant in the formula. To prevent recrystallization, solubility should begin by using salicylic acid to glycol at the ratio of 1:10 in your formula. Ethanol also helps keep it stable. For emulsions, it can also be added to the oil-phase in the presence of polar oils.

Use rate: 0.1 – 3.0% (1.0-2.0% in leave-on products. Up to 3.0% in shampoos for dandruff elimination.)

Temperature Tolerance: Avoid temperatures above 80°C.

pH Stability: 3.0 – 6.5 (As low as 3.0 for rinse-off products. Not less than 3.5 for leave-on products)
