DESCRIPTION: Tremoist (Trehalose) is a naturally occurring non-reducing disaccharide that can be found in plants, yeast, fungi, algae, etc. It provides moisturizing and protecting properties to both the skin and the hair. It also displays antioxidant properties. It offers ease of use being stable at high temperatures. It offers deep hydration in skincare with humectant properties. It has film-forming properties which prevent water loss from the skin for long-lasting hydration. It can be easily absorbed by the skin, protecting it from damage and improving its anti-desiccation and freezing tolerance abilities. It imparts a sparkling, shiny & soft feel to the skin. It also inhibits fatty acid decomposition, so it can used in products that prevent body odour. It replaces the lost moisture in the lipid bilayer hence resuming the cell function. It inhibits transepidermal water loss, and reduces itching due to dryness.
In hair care, it protects the hair from dehydration even under extreme conditions such as heat styling. It deeply nourishes the shafts and leaves them healthier and shinier
In formulas, it contributes to stability with antioxidant-chelating properties, and anti-freeze abilities. It promotes the formation of lamellar structure of intercellular lipids in the stratum corneum.
RESEARCH
In plants, tremoist protects the plant by replacing water when it is dehydrated, allowing the plant to revive when the plant absorbs water.
In one research, 3% Trehalose toner solution or placebo was applied on the inner forearms of 21 females with dry skin twice a day for 14 days. A water sorption-desorption test was performed on day 0, 7, and 14: Water was applied on the application area and the non-application area. Immediately after wiping, the SC water content (SWC) was measured every 30 seconds. The water-holding capacity of trehalose was calculated as displayed below. This shows that trehalose maintains the water-holding capacity of the skin
