DESCRIPTION: Betaine is a naturally-derived vegetal derived amino acid (trimethylglycine), an active conditioning agent, moisturizing and protective agent. A non-sensitizing, non-irritating agent that especially improves the skin’s reaction to surfactants by conditioning it. It is used in hair care and skincare products – rinse-off and leave-on products. in haircare, it has anti-static and conditioning properties. As an amphoteric agent, it acts as a cationic conditioner at acidic pH.
Betaine can also improve the integrity of the skin’s tight junction. When ‘loose’, pollutants and allergens can easily penetrate the skin and cause inflammation. A tight junction also prevents water loss. Therefore, by improving tight junction integrity, betaine increases the hydration of the skin and also protects the skin from harmful environmental substances.
Betaine also has the ability to increase the swelling speed of some hydrophilic thickeners and enhancers their thickening power by 20% on average. Additionally, when betaine is added to formulations containing surfactants, it has been shown to increase foam volume. This property of betaine is ideal for shampoos, especially when used to formulate a delicate, easy-rinse baby shampoo that contains a low amount of surfactants.
